History Welding Institute

The Welding Institute is an independent organization, founded in 1958 as a specialized institution for the professional provision of welding services.

The Institute was founded by the professional association of engineers, technicians and welders - DUZS (eng. Society for the Advancement of Welding in Serbia), with the following objectives and tasks: improvement and popularization of welding techniques in industry and craftsmanship; education and training of all types of welding personnel; introduction of new welding procedures; introduction of the ckecks of qualification of welders and welding technology; quality control of welding works, welded products and constructions. In 1960, shortly after its establishment, the Institute expanded its activity with research and development services and a documentation department was formed with the objective to collect and publish scientific and technical information in the field of welding.

During its existence, following the economy requirements, the Institute adapted its activity and organization to market conditions.

The Institute’s initial activity in education was training welders and then welding instructors. After a couple of years, the activity was extended to the education of technicians and engineers with specialist courses. The Institute has remained faithful to that tradition even today. In the 1980s, another type of education was introduced – the training of personnel for nondestructive testing. A series of specialized seminars with different topics was also organized, with the objective of updating the knowledge of a large number of already trained welding experts.

Today, the Institute conducts training of welding personnel according to international standards in accordance with relevant training programs.

As part of the quality control and supervision services, the usual mechanical, metallographic and technological testings were applied, later including nondestructive testing, as well as checks and other specific testing, performing following assignments: equipment inspection, operating plant and construction inspection, reception of equipment, pipelines and constructions, technical inspection, reception and maintenance of purpose-built facilities; quality control of products and equipment parts during production and upon receipt/delivery; supervision of welding works; supervision over conducting of cathodic protection; investment and technical documentation inspection; nostrification of technical documentation for coordination with valid regulations etc. Today, following the requirements of internationally developed conformity assessment systems, these tasks are performed by special organizational units of the Institute – Laboratory and Inspection Body.

Since 1974, the Institute has found its place as a qualified institution for inspection and assessment of the capability of manufacturers of welded products and constructions, in accordance with the standards that were considered as the basis for ensuring the quality of welding works, as well as for issuing of the „Certificate of Operational Capability".

The Institute also established a workshop for providing repair services using welding and related procedures (surfacing, metallizing), which found significant application in the revitalization of equipment and tools. Technological solutions were verified after operation and rated as successful for the longevity of equipment.
